Scleral Shell Prosthesis
A Scleral Shell Prosthesis is a thin hard acrylic shell-like artificial eye which is designed to be worn over a
discolored and/or disfigured eye. It covers the entire surface of the cosmetically blemished eye, restoring a natural
appearance. There is no surgery involved in obtaining a Scleral Shell Prosthesis, just a few visits to our office.
Our focus in the fitting process is to provide you with a natural appearance by making an exact color match and by
maximizing movement of the Prosthesis.
This process will also allow us to create an anatomically correct and comfortable
Prosthesis. The fitting process involves making an impression of your cosmetically blemished eye. This “Impression Fit”
is used to create the Scleral Shell which helps us to provide you with a maximum movement and wearing time.
Usually three visits are needed to complete the fitting process. Upon request, especially for those patients traveling
far distances, we do provide a special one day service.
Our Ocularists are trained to manage each patient’s unique condition to enable them to maximize wearing time of the
Prothesis. We help our new patients on an individual basis by developing a daily schedule of progressive wearing time to
gradually increase the Prosthesis usage. Most patients with a moderately shrunken eye, called a “Phthisical eye”, are
able to wear their Prosthesis continually, even when sleeping.
Patients will be expertly trained by our Ocularists to insert and remove their shell and are given easy instructions
on care and maintenance.
